How does a sewage treatment plant work?

Sewage treatment plants work much like a septic tank, in that they both separate out the water from the solids. The water is released, and the solid material or ‘sludge’ collects at the bottom and needs to be removed and emptied periodically.  Not doing so can impact the working of the sewage treatment plant, and over time will lead to slow drainage and unwanted smells.

Change in regulations

In January 2020 the septic tank regulations changed. If you had your tank installed after 1st January 2020, the chances are that you will have a sewage treatment plant, rather than a septic tank.  For example, you may be a new build, or recently had your old tank replaced. They are also often referred to as a ‘treatment plant’ or ‘sewage treatment system’. These are the new systems which have replaced the ‘traditional’ septic tank. However, although they work in much the same way, they are much cleaner!

A sewage treatment plant cleans the water so it can safely discharge to a waterway, and the solid material or ‘sludge’ settles to the bottom.  It is this sludge that builds up over time, and needs to be cleaned out and removed. Most manufacturers recommend annual emptying of this sludge. This will help the sewage treatment plant to run efficiently and prolong its lifespan. Depending on the size of your tank, the size of your household, and the amount of usage, you may be able to leave it slightly longer before you need it pumping out. We can help advise you on this.
